Do You Squidoo?

Even though Squidoo.com has been around since March 2006 and has been very popular almost from the beginning I have found that many would be Internet marketers aren’t familiar with Squidoo.

Squidoo is a website where users can create their own single page sites. The service is provided for free and the process is easy enough that almost anyone can create their own page easily. These pages are known as lenses and each lens can be on any topic that the creator wants. There are lenses on people, places, hobbies, sports, products, animals, philosophy, and politics.

Lenses aren’t primarily intended to provide information, the emphasis on a lens is placed on recommending and pointing to content elsewhere on the web. Users (known as lensmasters) are encouraged to promote their own agendas, show their own expertise, and promote their own causes, products, and opinions.

As you can see, Squidoo can be a great resource for Internet marketers. Unlike Forums or blogs, outright promotion of products and services are encouraged.

When building your lens, you DO want to provide visitors with relevant content and information about the subject you are promoting. While Squidoo is an excellent tool for self-promotion, if you just log in and create an “advertisement” lens with no relevant content or information to share with visitors, your page is not likely to attract many visits.

This contrasts a bit with what was stated earlier. I said Squidoo is not a “content” oriented site. Understand you cannot create pages and pages of information about a topic you are passionate about. What you will do is provide basic and interesting information, and links to relevant and helpful content for users.

There are many ways you can use Squidoo with your Internet business. You can use Squidoo to create back links to your website, increase your search engine rankings, build your list, or promote affiliate programs or your own products.

How to treat a list

Building a list of potential clients is a great start to your online business. However, knowing what to do with this list can make the difference between having a hobby and making a living online.

Content is king. You must provide good quality information to your readers. I have been on hundreds of lists over the years and you would be surprised how many list owners fail at this important goal. Many simply send out offer after offer, not providing any substance to their readers. Most of these disappear in a short time because of lack of sales.

The list owners who are making money are not simply promoting products and services, but are providing good information to their customers. They treat their list with respect and consideration. These list owners provide their readers with useful and insightful information on a regular basis.

In most cases you should contact your readers at least weekly and perhaps as often as daily, depending on your particular niche. For instance, if you are providing stock market analysis you could easily send out an email every day after the markets close, or even send out several updates during the day.

When you do promote a product or service to your readers you must remember that the quality of the product or service will directly reflect on your reputation. You should purchase whatever you are interested in promoting before promoting it. A quick way to lose readers and potential income is to promote something that doesn’t live up to the hype of its sales pitch. And a great side advantage of purchasing the product ahead of time is that you can write a review of the product. Personal reviews are a great sales technique that have a higher sales rate than other types of promotions.

Many successful online marketers have followed these simple techniques to build their online incomes.
